Mt. Pinatubo caused a disaster on June 15, 1991. The world was surprised by the second largest terrestrial eruption of 20th
century after Novarupta eruption in Alaska on 1912. According to U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 113-97, “The eruption produced high-speed avalanches of hot ash and gas, giant
mud flows, and a cloud of volcanic ash hundreds of miles across". Philippines
encountered ash and sustained about $100 million in damage, devastated many
livelihood and lives among neighboring town and those who are living on it.
Why is it called as a Beautiful Disaster?
Obviously,
due to the stunning majestic scenery of the crater developed by event and span
of time, Mt. Pinatubo evolved from a devastated state to a splendid “beautiful
disaster”. Aside from its beauty, it became a channel of livelihood for many
people for its bloomed tourism.
Personally,
I considered it a beautiful disaster considering the realization I had when I
did the trek up to the crater. You may want to see my full experience and
